Neem In Human and Animal Health
Neem tree is a well known tree in India and recognized by different names in different states of India as well as different parts of the world. Almost every Indian knows the tree for its medicinal values. According to Susruta a known Hindu physician (800B. C.), a decoction of nimba (neem) is prescribed in ‘kustha’ (leprosy). Neem is, thus, perhaps the oldest plant used as medicine in India. The earliest authentic record of information is in ‘Arthashtra’ (Treatise of Polity) of Kautilya or Chankya known as Indian Machiavelli has mentioned extraction of neem oilfor medicinal purposes (4th Century, B. C.). It is, thus, perhaps the oldest oil used as medicine. That the book willfindfavour by traditional users of neem products, Ayurvedic, Unani and Sidha system of medical practitioners as well as doctors and researchers for better and effective utilization of the tree as a source of safe medicine.

Common risk factors for communicable diseases (CDs), noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), injuries and RCH issues such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, substance abuse, harmful use of tobacco and alcohol, negligence in road safety, stress, unsafe water, lack of personal and oral hygiene, etc. have become the leading determinants for morbidity and mortality worldwide. Among NCDs, a majority of all deaths in the world are caused by cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases. These diseases affect productivity and drain family resources so adversely that they have become a major threat to the economic and social development. Today, the call for promoting healthy lifestyle by reducing above mentioned risk factors remains a challenge in both urban and rural settings. Simultaneously, there is a need to understand the underlying social determinants caused by globalization, urbanization and aging population to help reduce the prevalence of mortality and morbidity from common risk factors of CDs, NCDs, injuries and RCH issues.
