Contact Lens Principles and Practice
Science and art of contact lens fitting, this subject gets pushed into brevity in the ever- expanding knowledge about conditions more often dealt by ophthalmologists. Largely dealt by optometrists as a cosmetic alternative to spectacles, the potential of this little plastic disc has been underutilized. Advancement of technologies dealing with corneal topography, has enlarged the horizon for the contact lens practitioner to satisfactorily treat more pathologies and often avert the need for surgical intervention. Lens fitting requires basic understanding of optical principles, corneal topography and ocular surface in addition to the basic tenets of fitting different lens prototypes. This book deals with all these aspects and attempts to concisely depict this artful science with details in fitting both simple and complex cases. Kirti Singh MD, DNB, FRCS is currently Director Professor of Ophthalmology, Guru Nanak Eye Centre, Maulana Azad Medical College and associated hospitals, New Delhi. She brings her two decades of experience in the field to write this structured, comprehensive book in an endeavor to detail these expanded uses of the contact lenses, thereby enabling the practitioner to comfortably practice such fittings. She was trained at Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and learnt the advanced skills in the field of contact lens at Moorfields Eye Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust, London, under stalwarts like Prof R Buckley and Mr Ken Pullum (a scleral lens pioneer). She has also done her glaucoma fellowship under Prof G Spaeth at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, USA. She is currently pursuing an advanced fellowship in medical education and her passion in teaching has led her to write several books. During her stint at the helm of contact lens and low vision unit at Guru Nanak Eye Centre, Maulana Azad Medical College and associated hospitals, New Delhi, for nearly two decades, she practised and improvised fitting complicated cases, especially young children. This book depicts synopsis of her journey therein and has the stamp of a well- trained, highly experienced, innovative teacher practitioner. She has witnessed the transformation in quality of life due to restoration of functional vision in both young and old, primarily the former. This book depicts her grasp over basic and complex lens fitting, ably illustrated with related clinical photographs and relevant diagrams. Her compilation of hundreds of clinical photographs provides the reader a real-time experience of fitting these complex cases.
